Maths Week

Quiz for Maths Week

Ms O'Brien sent us a note about the annual Maths Week quiz. Well done to Nathan Sheehan Brennan, Aisling Coombes and Luke Martin on their winning performance. Cinema vouchers are on the way to the winners.
To those who did not win on this occasion, we are reminded of a quote from Albert Einstein, "Do not worry about your difficulties in Mathematics. I can assure you mine are still greater!"

DCU celebrated Maths Week by inviting 5th year students from local schools to a Maths Seminar sponsored by AOL.  Ken Whelan, the first speaker showed the students that music is heavily laden with Mathematics.  Complex Maths Functions are used to synthesize music, you have the periodic sequence of scales, sound waves depicted by sine graph and logarithmic scales to calculate intervals to name just a few areas of Mathematics. Rhythm of course is all about numbers.

The first year maths classes went for a maths walk in the locality on Wednesday, 14 October 2014, to discover the mathematics which is all around them. Apart from the squares, circles and rectangles that form part of so many designs and buildings, pupils saw examples of segments, semi-circles, rhombuses and octagons as they walked along. They observed numbers everywhere such as postal districts, height limits, car registration plates and house numbers. Numbers were discussed with examples of odd numbers, even numbers, ascending and descending numbers and prime numbers.
